- What is NFC Technology? a method of wireless data transfer that detects and then enables technology in close proximity to communicate without the need for an internet connection.
- How can you get NFC technology on your smartphone? A person can download various apps to their smartphones. Some smart phones have certain NFC already installed on their phones when they first purchase them.
- What are the pros and cons of using NFC technology? The pros of using NFC Technology is the convenience factor. For instance instead of walking around with tons of money on you a person can install an app like Google Pay that can access your funds to make purchases and payments. Even in gaming the technology is being used to play video games. The negative is security issue. Due to this technology being so new it is virtually a new frontier that lack guaranteed safety. For instance if someone is very close to you they can actually zapp your information from your credit card (if its NFC). There doesn't necessarily have to be any physical contact for this to happen.
- What are some other devices using NFC technology today? Tablets, Speakers, Phones, Cash Registers, Watches,
- Is NFC technology secure? Why? Why Not? No it is not secure. The transaction usually occurs over open air waves that are not secure.
- Would you use NFC technology? Why or why not? Yes I will and I do....I use it to pay for my items at places such as Starbucks, Panera Bread. I'm careful and do not allow people within my private space which is a key to dissuading culprits from a successful thief.

I posted pics of NFC used as Bluetooth headphones for gaming and also a figurine that you can tap to your device to which it will activate that character in the game that your playing. Probably the most popular usage of NFC is the credit card being used to make a payment.

Good write-up and examples regarding NFC technology. Question. What is the second photo (just below headphones picture) show? Is this a sort of game that's being played? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteAs we discussed in class, NFC technology has many valid use cases in the payment industry today. While the close proximity of communication (2 in.) provides some safety in terms of raising the question "how often does someone actually stand that close to you" it is never a bad idea to invest in a credit card sleeve protector as an added security measure. Here's a link to one example:

Regarding our in-class discussion re: how and why do magnetic hotel room keys get de-magnetized so easily; I found an article that addresses the issue. However, the verdict on what and how they are de-magnetized is still unclear:

Any type of external magnetic interference can affect the magnetic strip on these hotel room keycards; including wireless devices emitting a radio frequency (RF) signal. Radio signals are electromagnetic and therefore can cause a magnetic field; perhaps even strong enough to affect keycards. Interesting stuff.
