Near Field Communication

  • What is NFC Technology?  a method of wireless data transfer that detects and then enables technology in close proximity to communicate without the need for an internet connection.

  • How can you get NFC technology on your smartphone? A person can download various apps to their smartphones. Some smart phones have certain NFC already installed on their phones when they first purchase them.

  • What are the pros and cons of using NFC technology? The pros of using NFC Technology is the convenience factor. For instance instead of walking around with tons of money on you a person can install an app like Google Pay that can access your funds to make purchases and payments. Even in gaming the technology is being used to play video games. The negative is security issue. Due to this technology being so new it is virtually a new frontier that lack guaranteed safety. For instance if someone is very close to you they can actually zapp your information from your credit card (if its NFC). There doesn't necessarily have to be any physical contact for this to happen.

  • What are some other devices using NFC technology today? Tablets, Speakers, Phones, Cash Registers, Watches,

  • Is NFC technology secure?  Why?  Why Not? No it is not secure. The transaction usually occurs over open air waves that are not secure.

  • Would you use NFC technology?  Why or why not? Yes I will and I do....I use it to pay for my items at places such as Starbucks, Panera Bread. I'm careful and do not allow people within my private space which is a key to dissuading culprits from a successful thief.

Download//Install/Run ExperienceIndexOk. exe

I ran an experience index test on my Lenovo Laptop. My base score was 4.7 due to my lowest feature ,which was the graphics. To increase my overall score  I would have to boost some power into my graphics area. One way to do that is to purchase a graphics card.

Computer recycling versus donating

Computer recycling versus donating

The question is should we recycle or should we donate when we have no need for our old computers. Both options have a much better outcome than simply throwing away a computer. Our computers have various toxics within them which could lead to multiple health risks for the public at large. Recycling and/or donating a computer can lead to many positive and beneficial outcomes for our society. For instance donating a computer can lead to a student and/or their family having a computer for the first time at home. On the other hand recycling could benefit us all with the array of useable energy that can be created from recycling.

As for myself I can attend the annual recycling event in a town that is approximately five minutes from my home. I can take various items that would be harmful to our communities if disposed of in an improper way. The event is held in Westchester, Illinois which is one town over from where I live. Naperville, Illinois is another town that have helpful resources to encourage recycling. Both of these communities have extensive websites that educate the communities about the available assistance to recycle items such as computers. See link below.

Other resources provided by the town of Westchester,IL  http://www.westchester-il.org/DocumentCenter/View/3414

I see that my Professor primary employer is an active partner with recycling and reusing.
Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD)https://www.mwrd.org/irj/portal/anonymous/Home

Some might be more inclined to donate to charities and not for profit organizations. I found a few companies that do accept computer donations and will actually wipe and/or destroy the hard drive for the donor’s safety. They do ask for a monetary donation also to help cover certain cost that incur when refurbishing a computer. FreeGeek is one of the organizations who provide these services. Their name is just a little misleading because some of their services come with a requested price. Although not expensive it is still a undertone fee.

To protect yourself if you decide to donate it would be wise to utilize one of the various disk cleaning software if you do it yourself.

The best way to protect against any unauthorized use of personal information is to use a disk-cleaning tool that obliterates all data on the hard drive. Examples below are recommended disk-cleaning utilities.

Commercial Windows Disk-Cleaning Software:

·         Blancco Data Erasure Software
·         DestructData
·         WipeDrive

Free Windows Disk-Cleaning Software:

·         Active@ KillDisk
·         DBAN

Macintosh Disk-Cleaning Software:

·         Disk Utility (it comes with Mac OS X and can be found in the Utilities folder)
·         WipeDrive for Mac

Donating also assist with the digital divide for those who are in poverty stricken communities. The more people who have access to computers, and the internet the more collaboration opportunities for our society.  According to the latest statistics of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Approximately 40 percent of computers and other consumer electronic devices are being recycled in the United States..

My final assessment is that whether you donate or recycle you are doing a great service to our communities by being resourceful. Being educated and informed about simplistic disposing procedures can not only save our environment but it might just save some lives.

Hard Disk Drive vs Solid State Drive

HARD DISK DRIVE VS SOLID STATE DRIVE

HDD -The traditional spinning hard drive is the basic storage on a computer. The information on it doesn't "go away" when you turn off the system, as is the case with data stored in RAM. A hard drive is  a metal platter with a magnetic coating that stores your data. A read/write head on an arm accesses the data while the platters are spinning that is relayed output for either viewing and/or listening.

SSD-   Basically does everything a hard drive do, but data is instead stored on interconnected flash memory chips that retain the data even when there's no power present. The chips can be permanently installed on the system's motherboard (as on some small laptops and ultraportables),or on a PCI Express (PCIe) card (in some high-end workstations and an increasing number of bleeding-edge consumer systems), or in a box that's sized, shaped, and wired to slot in for a laptop or desktop's hard drive (common on everything else). These flash memory chips are different than that which is used in USB thumb drives, and are typically faster and more reliable. SSDs are consequently more expensive than USB thumb drives of the same capacities.

Pro/cons – In regards to dollar per gigabyte SSDs are more expensive than hard drives. For instance a 1TB internal 2.5-inch hard drive costs approximately $40 to $50, but a SSD of the same capacity starts at $230. That is about 4 to 5 cents per gigabyte for the hard drive and 23 cents per gigabyte for the SSD. So depending on your budget the final factor could come down to price. The HHD is typically way more less expensive than the SSD.

Capacity - SSD units top out at 4TB and are rare and expensive. It is more common to find 500GB to 1TB units as primary drives in systems.  500GB is considered a "base" hard drive in 2016, pricing and budget desires can push that down to 128GB for a lower-priced SSD-based systems. Multimedia users will require even more, with 1TB to 4TB drives common in high-end systems. This comparison comes down to funds once again. If funds are not an issue the SSD is the way to go. If you are adhering to a strict budget the traditional hard drive will suffice.

Speed - An SSD-equipped PC will boot in less than a minute, and often in just seconds. A hard drive requires time to speed up to operating specs, and will continue to be slower than an SSD during normal use. A PC or Mac with an SSD boots faster, launches and runs apps faster, and transfers files faster. The SSD is the obvious winner in this comparison.

Durability - A SSD has no moving parts, so it is more likely to keep your data safe in the event you drop your laptop bag or your system is shaken about while it's operating. Most hard drives park their read/write heads when the system is off, but they are flying over the drive platter at a distance of a few nanometers when they are in operation. If you're rough on your equipment, an SSD is recommended. Considering I have lost many files due to dropping and/or shaken PC and/or Laptop I can appreciate the SSD durability over the hard drive.

Size - Form Factors: Hard drives rely on spinning platters so there is a limit to how small they can be manufactured.  SSDs have no such limitation, so they can continue to shrink as time goes on. SSDs are available in 2.5-inch laptop drive-sized boxes, but that's only for convenience. SSDs will continue to grow considering most of us are more appeal to smaller and less bulky devices.

Overall comparison - Hard drives win on price, capacity, and availability. SSDs work best if speed, ruggedness, form factor, noise, or fragmentation (technically part of speed) are important factors to a buyer. If it weren't for the price and capacity issues, SSDs would be the hands-down winner. In regards to the capacity issues it only a issue due to how expensive it is to purchase bigger storage space. The final assessment is that depending your expertise and agenda sticking with a HDD is logical if you are a casual PC/Lap Top user. If you make a living with the usage of PC/Lap Top devices investing in a SSD would be beneficial.

To further this comparison I added some typical needs that a buyer might consider when purchasing either a HDD or SDD. Once again the determining factor comes down to need and lifestyle.

HDDs
• Enthusiast multimedia users and extensive downloaders: Video collectors need space, and you can only get to 4TB of space inexpensively with hard drives.
• Budget buyers:  Plenty of cheap space. SSDs are too expensive for $500 PC buyers.
• Graphic arts and engineering professionals: Video and photo editors wear out storage by wear and tear. Replacing a 1TB hard drive will be less expensive than replacing a 500GB SSD.
• General users: General users are a toss-up. Folks who prefer to download their media files locally will still need a hard drive with more capacity. But if you mostly stream your music and videos online, then buying a smaller SSD for the same money will give you a better experience.
SSDs
• Road warriors: People who are rough on their devices will love the durability of SSD. The toughness and extra security of files is helpful for those who are constantly on the go.
• Speed demons: If you need things done now, spend the extra bucks for quick boot-ups and app launches. Supplement with a storage SSD or hard drive if you need extra space.
• Graphic arts and engineering professionals: Yes, I know I said they need hard drives, but the speed of an SSD may make the difference between completing multiple tasks for your client or just one. These users are prime candidates for dual-drive systems.
• Audio engineers and musicians:  SSD’s are quieter for recording.

The average price for an 1TB internal hard drive was between $49-$75.

The average price for an 1TB SSD $260 and possible beyond $2000.

Human Digital Implant debate

After just enduring surgery and the roller coaster ride that happens on the road to recovery its ironic that my perspective on Human Digital Implant is being sought. It is also ironic because this time a year ago I had a intense debate with a friend about this very subject. My friend wanted to know if giving the choice between digital implant or disobeying the law would I conform to the law and proceed with an embedded chip. My friend was vehemently opposed to any implants mandated by the government as probably most people would be. That is the conspiracy concept that most of us have about our government. We all at times think that our government is attempting to monitor and restrict our every move. Personally my initial response was "HECK NO!!!!". I really don't see the benefit of a digital implant inside of me unless I'm going on a five year sabbatical in an unknown part of this world and/or beyond and want to be found if I'm ever lost. I always flash back to movies like the "Manchurian Candidate" and the "Jason Bourne' movie series whenever conspiracy topics are discussed. I'm not willing to have a chip implanted in my body due for various reasons other than just government conspiracy.

If I did comply with an inserted chip it would be useful to have my medical history and even my family contact information embedded. Let's say someone get robbed and hit over the head. When they come to there is no memory of their past life and don't even have their ID due to the robbery. If there is an indication that this person have an ID chip inserted family members and friends can be contacted to aide and assist the person. Some people and possibly even I would be open to discuss violent repeated sex offenders having a chip inserted into them for monitoring purposes. Many parolees cut their ankle bracelet which leave law enforcement unable to track them. This leads to danger for all citizens. I would listen and entertain a discussion on inserting chips in repeat violent offenders to be able to monitor their every movement. People who suffer from Dementia and other mental ailments would possibly benefit if they are ever lost and unable to remember how to return home.

A precaution I would take with implanted digital devices/chips is to ensure the material that the chips are made out of are safe. Corrosion is an issue and can be detrimental to a person if not monitored.
I would also set the fine very high for abuse by law enforcement and the medical industry. When I say high I mean upper seven figures would be the minimum for any violations.

In the following states it is illegal to mandate digital chip implants.
California, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin

My final assessment is that this debate won't be over anytime soon and I'm surprised more states have not made it illegal to mandate such an intrusive law. That make me think it can possibly happen.

Multi Media and Education Software head to head

MULTIMEDIA COMPARISON

PICASA

  • Picasa is a FREE multimedia related software for the viewing, organizing, and editing of the pictures in your laptop.
  • With this software you can create an album of your own digital pictures and share them with your loved ones as well
  • you can download a Picasa app for your android phone, windows phone and your iPhone also.

VLC MEDIA PLAYER

  •   This is a platform where you can play your videos and audios for free.
  • Can be used for your android phone, windows phone, iPad, iPhone and iPod for free and can be downloaded easily from the app store.
  • VLC Media Player software has got some outstanding features such as it can auto rotate the video that had been shot at weird angle or if you happen to stop a video in the middle, then the next time you play, you won’t have to start from the beginning and it can just resume your video from where you left.
  • You can easily add subtitles to your video.

INKSCAPE

  • This is a software that you can create as well as edit the vector images including the illustrations, the logos, the complex paintings, the diagrams etc.
  • With this software, you can create your own images and shapes under the SVG format.
  • The inkscape software can not only be used on your laptop or you MacBook but can be installed on your android phone also.

Considering all of these software are free they leave as desirability in regards to buying. If I was choosing it would be VLC Media Player. I like that you can play the videos and audios for free. The video editing under any circumstances sold me due to usual habit of recording sideways and upside down accidentally at sporting events I write for.

ABYY FINEREADER 11:

In my volunteer capacity I have a constant need to do research that pertains to my community and alma mater high school. Preservation of photos and documents some of the more complex tasks that I occasionally come across. For instance my Alma Mater Proviso East have a room full of yearbooks dating all the way back to the 1920's. Due to the possibility that these year books might be the last that exist it is vital that they are copied electronically and hard copy. Copying a year book text on a scanner can be very difficult at times. The text and even the photo might not produce a clear copy. That is why I find the software Abyy FineReader 11 very interesting. There are cheaper versions of this type of software but Abyy FineReader is the best version on the market. The price is steep but if you have a need for serious and clear scanning this software is a possible must have.

  • Cost - $169.00
  • Can easily handle difficult & massive jobs like converting complex tables into usable spreadsheet.
  • FineReader has manual-correction tools for the most accurate possible output.
  • Acrobat completely refuses to perform OCR on PDF files that have “mixed” content, meaning PDFs that combine the actual image with text inserted by software - i.e. the page address and other information inserted by a web browser when you save a web page to PDF. Files such as this , FineReader will produce OCR output and Acrobat won’t.

  Hello everyone!

After years of interest I've finally joined the bloq community. Thanks to my Intro to Computers class at Triton College I've stepped into another realm of cyberspace that many others have done many moons ago. If you are curious about the title of my bloq just know that currently my mind is engulfed with relevant community issues. I'm sure over a period of time the tone of my bloq with change but as for now the theme will be a heavy dosage of community volunteering and building bridges for resources. Thank you and looking forward to some mind tingling exchanges of ideas and opinions!
